5 Tips on How to Stick to Your Goals in 2019

New year, new me. We watch it happen every year. So many people spend the last couple of days of the year planning, hoping, and wishing for all of the things they want to happen in the new year. “I want to lose 25 pounds”, “I want to write a novel”, etc. The gyms are packed in January and it seems like everyone around you is super motivated, but at some point in February, March, or sometimes April, we lose all drive to follow through with our goals.

2019 will NOT be like that for you. I’m not usually one to make these grandiose goals for a new year. I tend to look at every day as a fresh start and if I think of something I want to accomplish, I set out in that moment to achieve it. That being said, there is something to be said about the energy of a new year. It is a great time to reflect on the past year and incorporate new habits and continue with old ones that are beneficial in propelling you toward the future you desire.

I believe there is a full proof plan that will guarantee you achieve your goals for 2019! Here are my best tips!

  1. Know Your Why

This is probably the most crucial element when it comes to achieving your goals. If you do not know exactly why you are setting out to achieve what you want, you will lose motivation so quickly when you do not get the results you want in a couple of weeks. Nothing long lasting is achieved overnight. Wanting to look a certain way is not a good enough reason to make a goal of working out in the new year. Your why behind the goal has to be bigger than all of the challenges you will face on the road toward achievement.

2. Be Realistic

I love the ambitious energy in the early months of the new year, but so often when people start to lose motivation it is because they were not realistic when setting their goals. If you’ve never written in your life, planning to write a novel in one year is a really intimidating goal. If you’ve never worked out before, planning on going to the gym every day is a really scary goal. Everyone has to start somewhere with any thing so be realistic about where you’re starting and where you want to be by the end of the year. These things take time so be patient with yourself.

3. Break It Up

If you’re setting out to achieve something you’ve never done before, it can be pretty scary knowing exactly how to get there. I think one of the easiest ways to achieve a big goal is to break it up into smaller goals. Figure out step by step exactly what you need to complete to achieve your bigger goal and focus on one small goal at a time. Your big goal will seem less scary and you will stay motivated each time you achieve one of your smaller goals as well!

4. Envision Your Future

One of my favorite ways to stay focused on my goals is to envision them every day. When we constantly imagine how we want our future to look in great detail our mind will automatically start thinking of avenues we can take to accomplish it! I love making vision boards with images of my goals and keeping it somewhere I will see it daily whether that be in my closet or by my mirror. I also love writing out my goals every single day. It’s another great way to make sure I am focused on my goals, but the trick is to write them as if they have already happened. If you’re constantly saying “I will do…” you’re mind will always keep that goal in the future. In every moment act as if your goals have already happened. How would the person you want to be act, what would they say, wear, feel, etc.

5. Be Consistent

This is essential. You may make progress, but if you stop being consistent halfway through, you’re not going to achieve what you set out to. The difference between those who succeed and those who don’t is those who do never give up. It’s that simple. There will be challenges along the road, but they only make you stronger. Every time you fall down, you learn something new. It doesn’t matter how many times you fall as long as you pick yourself back up again. Never lose faith in yourself or your goal and you are bound to succeed.

The difference between who you are today and who you want to be by the end of the year is a compilation of your daily habits. Know the bigger reason behind your goals, be realistic, break them up into smaller goals, envision your future, and be consistent every single day in the pursuit of your goals and there is no doubt you will achieve them. Don’t let 2019 be just another year you let you goals fall through. Strive to be better each and every day and by the end of this year, there is no telling where you could be!
